A Year In Books.

Last week I read I Was Told There Would Be Cake by Sloane Crosley. It’s a collection of essays, which are really just artfully retold scenes from Crosley’s life. I was enthralled from the first page. This collection reminded me of someone…who could it be…..hmmm…. oh yeah! It’s me. Crosley’s retelling of some of her more awkward and hilarious escapades was like looking into a mirror, and that mirror had words on it, and those words were these stories. Of course, I guess any single woman in her twenties would see herself in these stories so I guess my mirror has a lot of faces on it too. What the heck, The more the merrier or mirrorier. I’m not sure how that works exactly.
One of my favorite stories was the one Crosley told of locking herself out of both her old and new apartments in the same day. It’s something I can easily see myself and many of my friends doing. I also really liked Crosley’s wedding horror story- we all have one. Except in her horror story, she was maid-of-honor and the bride was someone she had been friends with in high school and then not spoken to in years. Life is crazy, huh? While all of the stories are hilarious, they are also very thought-provoking. Or, I guess I should say, thought-poking because the ideas she explores, vegetarianism, altruism, baking disasters- sort of poke at your mind more than provoke it, and I have to say, the poking was less invasive but equally effective.
If I ever write a book someday, and I dearly hope I will. This is the type of book I want to write. Well, I mean, this would probably be more of a second book but if I ever write a second book, I want it to be as well-written and hilarious as this one.
What are you guys reading??
